British Commonwealth Gallantry, Meritorious and Distinguished Service Awards
These awards are designed to recognise military and civilian personnel who carry out acts which put their lives at risk while involved in war or warlike operational service or who put their own lives at risk while saving or attempting to save the life of another person. They also recognise meritorious or distinguished service in individual fields of activity or endeavour. Many New Zealanders received these awards in the past, however in 1999 the New Zealand Government instituted eight New Zealand Gallantry and Bravery awards which have replaced the British awards. Gallantry and Bravery awards may be awarded posthumously.
Information on how to find the citations for gallantry awards to New Zealand military personnel for acts of gallantry since 1914 can be found here.
