Unit Citations Awarded to New Zealand Military Units
Many Governments have prestigious awards for recognising outstanding commitment, courage, sacrifice and service by groups of individuals or organisations in situations of great stress or grave danger. These awards, commonly called 'Citations,' are sometimes awarded to specific military units and New Zealand units have been the recipients on several occasions. Because these are foreign awards approval must be given for them to be worn. The Citations featured are approved for wearing by members of the Units to whom they have been awarded. Citation insignia are worn on the right breast.
Position of Wear
Unit Citations and Unit Commendations are worn in New Zealand as follows:
a. on the right side of the jacket as a “permanent dress distinction” on all occasions by those personnel who served in the unit during the period for which the citation or commendation was earned; or
b. as a “dress distinction” on the right side of the jacket on all occasions by personnel who serve with the unit outside of the period when the citation or commendation was earned, and then only while they serve in that unit.
