CONTRIBUTING TO ENDURING FREEDOM

June 23, 2003

Today an Air Force Hercules with 37 personnel departed for the Afghanistan region to contribute to Operation Enduring Freedom.

Joining with coalition partners, the detachment will provide tactical air transport for the operation. Key tasks will include moving personnel and supplies throughout the region.

The Air Force team has been preparing since the Government announced its intention to deploy the Hercules and an Orion to Operation Enduring Freedom in November last year.

"I am confident the Air Force team will provide a valuable and internationally recognised contribution in the effort to prevent terrorism," says Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal John Hamilton.

"Our people are the best, they have been well trained, have equipment suited to the task and will perform to the highest standards."

Personnel are expected to return to New Zealand in 3 months.
