DFOs(F) - Defence Force Orders for the Air Force, Part 11, Chapter 7, Section 5

Paragraphs 11.230a to 11.230g

Chief of Air Force's Commendation

a. General. This commendation covers both Unit and individual recognition. All RNZAF units, personnel, Civil Staff employees of the RNZAF, and others deemed appropriate by the CAF, of all ranks are eligible for the award of the CAF Commendation. This award recognises contributions to the RNZAF by those personnel and units who deserve formal recognition but which may not be covered by the criteria for the awards from the sovereign.

b. Purpose. The purpose of the CAF commendation is to:
(1) Provide formal recognition of personal endeavours.
(2) Assist in promoting job and career satisfaction particularly in areas where valuable service seldom leads to other forms of recognition.
(3) Contribute to incentives to excel or perform to a higher standard.
(4) Recognise outstanding achievements or special Service by individuals or units of the RNZAF.

In addition to the award of a Certificate, individual recipients will be entitled to wear the CAF Commendation Dress Insignia. A CAF commendation insignia is not issued for Unit commendations.

c. Chief of Air Force Commendation Dress Insignia. The CAF Commendation Dress Insignia comprises an eagle and two stars on a dark blue background, with single diagonal light blue and red stripes. The eagle and stars represent the Office of the CAF. The insignia is to be worn on the right breast of the uniform shirt, Service Mess Dress Jackets, and 1.5 cm above the name tag. Where applicable, the award of two or more commendations is denoted by a gilt metal border to the insignia.

d. Recommendations. DCAF, ACC and Commanding Officers are to recommend personnel and units who are considered deserving of the award of the commendation through the command chain to Air Staff (DCM(F)). To provide for standardised presentation, recommendations, which must indicate the high standard of merit of each individual or unit, are to be submitted on form RNZAF500. The citation is to be prepared in accordance with the guidance notes on page 4 of the form. Recommendations are to be submitted in priority order.

e. Promulgation of Award. AFOs(T) will notify the CAF’s Commendation awards and provide authority for the issue of the CAF Commendation Dress Insignia.

f. Presentation of Certificate. The Certificate of Commendation will be presented personally to the recipient by the CAF at the first convenient opportunity following its award.

g. Wearing of Insignia of Commendations. RNZAF personnel of all ranks and civilian employees of the RNZAF may, subject to the approval of the CAF, accept and wear the insignia of commendations awarded by the CAF and commanders not below two star rank of Commonwealth Armed Forces, the Chief of Navy and the Chief of Army. The insignia is to be worn on the right breast of the uniform shirt, Service Dress and Mess Dress jacket, and 1.5 cm above the nametag where applicable.
